Convertible bonds trounced the rebounding stock market in 2009, with the Merrill Lynch All Convertibles All Qualities Index returning 49.1% to the S&P 500′s 26.5%. Investors noticed, and assets flowed into convertible bond mutual funds.

The numbers don’t lie. But beware of one of the oldest mistakes investors make. Investing this year and next year in last year’s winner is usually a very bad idea. It is possible convertibles will repeat their stellar performance again. It is also possible they won’t. Keep your eyes and minds open.
